Overview
Google DeepMind is not a robot manufacturer. It is an intelligence layer. The company's Gemini Robotics 2 model family powers whole-body humanoid control across hardware from multiple manufacturers — Apptronik's Apollo 2, Franka's Duo arm, and Boston Dynamics' Atlas among them.
The strategy mirrors Android. Google does not build phones — it provides the operating system that runs across Samsung, Xiaomi, and Motorola hardware. Google does not build robots — it provides the AI models and Intrinsic software platform that runs across Fanuc, Apptronik, and other manufacturers' hardware. The Fanuc partnership, announced in May 2026, is the Samsung moment: the world's largest robot manufacturer adopting Google's intelligence layer.
Gemini Robotics 2
Released July 30, 2026, Gemini Robotics 2 is the first model to control a full humanoid robot — walking, crouching, stretching, and manipulating objects — from a single natural language instruction. The system coordinates multi-robot teams and adapts to entirely new robot bodies in a few hours with fewer than 200 training examples.
Three sub-models make up the family:
Vision-Language-Action (VLA): The core model that translates natural language and visual input into robot actions. Whole-body control — feet to fingertips.
ER 2 (Enhanced Reasoning): Adds physical reasoning — understanding spatial relationships, planning multi-step tasks, and adapting to novel situations. Available in Google AI Studio now.
On-Device 2: Edge deployment model for running on robot hardware without cloud connectivity. Lower latency, privacy-preserving.
The Fanuc Partnership
The Fanuc deal, announced May 2026, integrates Google's Gemini Enterprise and Intrinsic platform into Fanuc's 1.1 million installed industrial robots. Fanuc shares surged 16 per cent to a record high.
Fanuc commands roughly 16 to 18 per cent of global robot shipments and an estimated 50 to 60 per cent of the global CNC market. The partnership gives Google access to the largest installed base of industrial robots in the world — an upgrade opportunity worth billions in software licensing.
Fanuc has already shipped more than 1,000 robots equipped with physical AI capabilities since demonstrating the technology at the International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo in December 2025.
The Android Strategy
Google's Intrinsic subsidiary built Flowstate, a web-based platform that lets manufacturers build robotic applications without writing proprietary code. The platform handles motion planning, machine learning integration, and task orchestration across different manufacturers' hardware.
A factory can swap robot arms from Fanuc, Universal Robots, and KUKA while keeping the same Intrinsic-powered software running. Google provides the intelligence layer without manufacturing a single robot.
In February 2026, Google moved Intrinsic from its experimental Other Bets division into the core business — a strategic signal that robotics software is now a priority, not an experiment.
Hardware Partners
Apptronik: Apollo 2 is the primary demo robot for Gemini Robotics 2. Google participated in Apptronik's $520M funding round at a $5B valuation.
Fanuc: 1.1 million installed industrial robots integrating Gemini Enterprise + Intrinsic. The largest hardware partnership.
Boston Dynamics: Gemini Robotics demonstrated on Boston Dynamics hardware. Hyundai-owned, now fully acquired.
Franka: Franka Duo arm used in Gemini Robotics 2 demonstrations for precision manipulation tasks.
Timeline
Focus Areas
Whole-Body Control
Gemini Robotics 2 drives entire humanoids — walking, crouching, tying knots. First model to control full body under one policy.
Platform Strategy
Intrinsic + Gemini = Android for robots. Hardware-agnostic. Multiple manufacturers. One intelligence layer.
Industrial AI
Fanuc partnership puts Google inside 1.1M factory robots. The largest industrial AI deployment in history.
Safety
ASIMOV-Agentic safety benchmark introduced with Gemini Robotics 2. Evaluates robot behaviour in novel situations.
Why It Matters
Google is not building robots. It is building the software that makes robots intelligent — and it is doing it the same way it built Android: by providing a platform that runs across every manufacturer's hardware. The Fanuc partnership gives Google 1.1 million robots. The Apptronik partnership gives Google a humanoid demo platform. Gemini Robotics 2 gives Google whole-body control.
The question was always which software platform would run the world's robots. Google's answer, delivered through Fanuc and Apptronik, is that the platform will be built by the same company that runs Android, Search, and YouTube.
The factory floor just became a software platform. Google is the platform.
