If you opened ChatGPT today and went looking for the DALL·E GPT, you won’t find it. OpenAI removed the official DALL·E GPT from ChatGPT on 30 August, following an announcement in its 31 July release notes.
Here’s the part that matters: image generation is not going anywhere. ChatGPT Images continues on every tier, including free. Custom GPTs with image generation enabled are explicitly unaffected. What’s being retired is the original DALL·E GPT — the older model and its interface — not the capability.
The part worth acting on is less reassuring. OpenAI recommends downloading any images you want to keep, and as of today it has not said what happens to images generated through the old GPT after retirement. In the absence of clear guidance, downloading is the only safe answer. If you’ve got DALL·E-era images sitting in your ChatGPT history that you care about — anything from family cards to drafts of book covers — grab them now, before “you can download them” becomes “you could have downloaded them.”
The API story already ended
Worth separating two timelines that often get blurred together. The dall-e-2 and dall-e-3 API models were removed on 12 May 2026, announced back in November 2025. Today is a ChatGPT product retirement only. So if you were still calling DALL·E through the API, that ship sailed nearly four months ago. Today’s change only affects the consumer product surface.

What stands out here is how routine this has become. OpenAI has been retiring models on a schedule that would have looked reckless three years ago: GPT-5.4 leaves Codex tomorrow, Claude Sonnet 5 reprices tomorrow, and two Kimi models sunset the same day. The AI model deprecation pace now runs faster than most company on-prem deployments.
For teachers and small business owners — a lot of our readers — the lesson isn’t “panic”, it’s “don’t treat any AI output as durable storage.” A model you build a workflow around today can be a release-note line item within a quarter. Keep your originals. Export your outputs. Assume nothing in a hosted product is an archive.
This is also the quiet end of an era. DALL·E 2 was many people’s first contact with AI image generation back in 2022 — the sparkly, weird, five-fingered hands period. Its retirement from the consumer product is less a capability change than a generational marker in how quickly this field replaces its own history. The speed is the story: a model that defined a category was inserted and removed like a software dependency.

- Download anything you want to keep — OpenAI has committed to nothing beyond its recommendation.
- If you had a custom GPT that relied on DALL·E-era style prompting, test it against the current image model; prompt styles don’t always transfer.
