Cerebras Locks In 165 MW in Finland — AI Infrastructure With the Heating Included

A phased 50→165 MW build in Mikkeli, contracted before construction. The interesting part isn't the megawatts — it's that Finnish planners treated AI compute as a heating utility.

Cerebras Systems and Compute Nordic Finland announced a new AI data centre in Mikkeli today, 1 September 2026 — a facility that will scale in phases to 165 MW of contracted IT capacity, with construction on the initial 50 MW phase already under way.

The deal’s structure is the interesting part. Rather than speculative build-and-hope, the capacity is locked in through a series of service orders, each with seven-year contract terms. Cerebras gets purpose-built infrastructure for its wafer-scale compute platform — the CS-4 racks we covered in August, which the company claims deliver 30x faster inference than GPU-based systems — and Compute Nordic gets a contracted tenant before pouring concrete. Compute Nordic’s CEO Pyry Virrantaus put it plainly in the release: “not a speculative bet on future demand… a contractually committed, phased build-out.”

Independent analysis from Ramboll’s Finnish Data Center Market Study estimates the full 165 MW build represents €1.0–1.7 billion in regional investment, 80–250 permanent direct jobs, and €0.8–2.5 million per year in property tax revenue for the South Savo region.

The heat is the product too

Most data centre coverage stops at the megawatts, so here’s the detail worth more attention: the Mikkeli facility is designed from the ground up to reuse its waste heat.

The design uses closed-loop cooling that recirculates water rather than drawing continuously from municipal supply, and the campus is built to feed thermal energy from AI compute back into the surrounding community as a heating resource. In a Finnish town where winter temperatures sit well below freezing for months, a data centre’s exhaust heat isn’t a nuisance to be vented — it’s a product. Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman framed it as pairing the company’s “more AI per megawatt” architecture with a facility designed for heat reuse “from the ground up.”

That framing matters because the global backlash against AI data centres has largely been about exactly the things Mikkeli is engineered to avoid: water draw, grid strain, and permanent industrial neighbours that give nothing back. The New Zealand contrast

It’s worth noting what this deal does that New Zealand keeps talking about doing. Contact Energy and others have floated South Island AI data centre proposals — we looked at whether New Zealand could position itself as a sovereign compute haven — but nothing at this contract maturity has landed here. Finland’s pitch is the same as ours on the fundamentals: cold climate, renewable-heavy grid, political stability. What Finland added was a seven-year offtake contract signed before construction, which is what turns a data centre from a land speculation story into an industrial anchor. That’s the gap.

A note of honesty on the numbers: the jobs figure deserves scrutiny. 80–250 permanent roles is real employment but modest for €1.7 billion — data centres are capital-intensive, not labour-intensive, and the release leans hard on “permanent technical roles” to distinguish itself from construction-only booms. Both things are true: durable local jobs, and a very expensive building that employs fewer people than a single mid-sized factory.

Whether Cerebras’ contracted demand holds is the other open question. The company IPO’d in 2026 and its stock has traded below its IPO price since June, so a 165 MW expansion is a bet that wafer-scale demand keeps compounding.
